Our next general meeting on Wednesday, June 7, beginning at 6:00 PM sharp, is a walking tour of Jefferson Market, led by the Historian of Jefferson Market Garden, Jack Intrator.
“On this tour, we will visit what might be the most fascinating and complex block in NYC in terms of evolution — from food market to jail to garden and from courthouse to library, all on a small triangular block in our neighborhood. We will discuss the Commissioners’ Plan of 1811 (laying out the street grid) at the Ruth Wittenberg Triangle, and we will explore issues of NYC landmark preservation. Our walk will include a visit to Patchin Place (home of John Reed, E. E. Cummings and many other notables) and West 11th Street, described by Jane Jacobs as the ideal urban block in her 1961 masterpiece The Death and Life of Great American Cities. As Villagers, we know how rich the neighborhood is in history and architecture. This tour will bring your knowledge to new levels.” – Jack Intrator
The tour, which begins at the front entrance of the Jefferson Market library at 245 6th Avenue at W. 10th Street, will last 75 to 90 minutes and will be an easy walk. Wine and Snacks to follow in Jefferson Market Garden. Many thanks to Sugar Barry for organizing this quintessential village treat.
