An evening with Karla and James Murray: “Capturing the Faces and Voices of Manhattan Neighborhood Storefronts”
September 27, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm EDT
Photos by Karla and James Murray
Please join Karla & James Murray (www.jamesandkarlamurray.com), the acclaimed photographers and best-selling authors as they speak about the inspiration behind their public workshop and resultant exhibition: Capturing the Faces and Voices of Manhattan’s Neighborhood Storefronts.
The photography and oral history workshop they led in partnership with the Neighborhood Preservation Center taught participants about the cultural significance of mom-and-pop stores and the impact they have on the pulse, life, and texture of their communities and how photography and oral history can be tools for public awareness and advocacy. Participants learned to create their own powerful photographs of neighborhood storefronts as well as record oral histories with shop owners, which communicate artistically and are insightful and moving. The resulting exhibition at the Little Underground Library at the Jefferson Market Library is on display through October 1, 2018.
There will be an opportunity to view the results of their project in the gallery following the lecture.
